Before the Chancellorship
|
The Nazi party
- Hitler attracted disillusioned people who had felt alienated from society and frightened by the specter of socialist revolution
- A growing number of people blamed German democracy for their misfortunes
- Between 1920 and 1932, the Nazi Party became the single largest party in parliament
- President von Hindenburg offered Hitler the chancellorship
- Hitler lost very little time in transforming the dying German republic into a single-party dictatorship
- Hitler made promises for a German Reich, or empire, that would last for thousands of years
- He used the disguise of a 'national emergency' to begin to build up the Nazi empire and start seizing power
Creation of Nazi power
- Once Hitler could start building the Nazi empire, he started by getting rid of any opposition from the working class as well as liberals
- He suppressed the German communist and socialist parties
- Outlawed all other social parties in Germany
- Replaced the federal structure with a highly centralized state that all but eliminated any power that the state and municipal governments had
- Guided the destruction of trade unions
- Prohibited strikes and lockouts
